  ENGLISH:
Our aims in the teaching of English at Bricklehurst Manor are:

To recognize all our pupils as individuals and to make sure that whatever their ability, they should each reach their full potential. To achieve this we aim to ensure that they all feel they have something valuable to say and are confident that their audience will listen and be supportive.

To develop every pupil’s ability to read, enjoy and interact meaningfully with a wide range of texts. Through our careful guidance we enable the pupils to begin a lifetime’s enjoyable experience of exploring the ideas available to them through
the writings of others.

To develop every pupil’s ability to write for a wide audience and range of purposes. Young pupils write for personal
reasons and as their skills develop throughout their time
at Bricklehurst they are able and confident to write for
imaginative purposes, demonstrating that they can order and present facts and opinions.

To develop listening and speaking skills for a range of different purposes. Pupils learn to listen and respond meaningfully to what they have heard. They have opportunities to develop their skills in using speech to explore and discuss new ideas. They make formal presentations to different audiences and they experience the emotions and ideas of others through role play and drama.

It is our belief that a developmental approach to reading, writing, speaking and listening is essential. The points of our approach are at the heart of the Early Learning Goals and the National Literacy Strategy and for this reason we have chosen to use these guidelines in our teaching of the Early Years (Kindergarten and Reception), Key Stage One (Years 1 and 2) and Key Stage Two (Years 3-6).

In the latter part of Key Stage Two we are meeting the demands of SATS, Common Entrance, 11+ and Scholarship examinations where we have a successful record of which we are justly proud.

MATHEMATICS:
Mathematics is an important part of our curriculum at Bricklehurst Manor. We aim to ensure that all the children who leave our school can use, with effective confidence, the mathematics they have covered. We make sure that they enjoy mathematics, have a positive attitude towards
it and are aware of its richness.

Our aims for the children are:

To feel confident and gain enjoyment from their Mathematics
thus ensuring a positive attitude towards Mathematics

To ensure a curriculum that has breadth and balance which
offers a coherent and progressive experience in Mathematics

To be able to use Mathematics in its widest context

To allow children to develop a variety of approaches of
working, with mental methods and strategies at the forefront

To develop a curiosity about Mathematics and raise questions

To use Mathematical language

To record their Mathematical work in appropriate ways using
the most suitable tools

To develop a sustained persistent approach in all areas

Each year group has its own scheme of work which ensures progression as children move upwards through the school.

Teachers consult a range of guidelines for their schemes which include: the National Curriculum, National Numeracy Strategy, Foundation Stage guidelines, Common Entrance syllabus and requirements for 11+ examinations to Grammar schools in Kent.

The school is well resourced with textbooks, workbooks for independent mental arithmetic work, practical apparatus, interactive whiteboards in many classrooms and computers linked to the Internet in every classroom. Teaching assistants provide valuable support in Mathematics lessons. Most classes in our prep school are set for Mathematics to ensure children are moving at the right pace.

Bricklehurst is proud of pupil’s successes in scholarship examinations and 11+ tests where Mathematics papers form
a large part of testing.

We support all pupils in Mathematics whatever their ability by providing extra individual support and differentiated tasks in lessons. We want our children to enjoy this important subject and be proud of their individual achievements.

    SCIENCE:
Our aim in teaching science at Bricklehurst is to alert children to the exciting, changing world in which they live. Practical and theoretical work is done to encourage a questioning mind, an understanding of themselves and an appreciation of their environment.

There are visitors and outings to places like Howletts Zoo in the pre-prep and Herstmonceaux Science Centre and The Science Museum in the prep department. Courses such as First Aid provide cross curricula links and help to develop practical skills and theoretical knowledge needed for the future.
