  HISTORY:
History is important because it is the knowledge essential
to the modern world. An awareness of our world’s history
will encourage responsible participation in an increasingly
multicultural society.

History is a non-core subject in the National Curriculum.
The skills, knowledge and concepts are set out in the National Curriculum and the schemes of work provide full access to its content, covering World, European, British and local history. The children’s thinking skills are encouraged in both Key Stages, developing information processing, reasoning, enquiry, creative and educational skills. These are skills which can be applied across the curriculum.

Our aims in the teaching of History at Bricklehurst Manor
are that all pupils will:

Have an experience of History which is both valid
and stimulating.

Gain an understanding of the past, with relation to
themselves, their families, their communities and the wider world, as appropriate to age, ability and aptitude.

Learn about the roles that people, movements and events have played in shaping modern society.

Learn to study and appreciate the value of historical
evidence and sources.

Encourage a lively and questioning approach to History
which enables them to enjoy what they do.

Develop the ability to communicate historical knowledge
and understand orally, visually and in writing using appropriate techniques and vocabulary.

Appreciate how and why some aspects of the past are
subject to different interpretations.

      GEOGRAPHY:
Geography at Bricklehurst is about making us all aware of the physical world around us. We learn how to place continents
and countries on the world map, and also study towns and villages in greater detail, learning to appreciate the ways in which places have changed and continue to change. We learn how to compare the features of local places with places further a field, both in Britain and the rest of the world. We learn about the physical features of the environment and teach awareness of contemporary issues involving human actions and their environmental consequences. We learn how to study geographical evidence, to ask appropriate questions, and use the correct vocabulary, and also to interpret and understand maps and diagrams appropriately.

      R.E:
In R.E. our aim is for the children to develop their knowledge of the beliefs, values and practices of the main faiths as well as understanding their similarities and differences. We do have a greater emphasis on Christianity which is apparent in our assemblies and Christmas and Harvest services in Stonegate Church. We also look at exemplary life stories and how that person’s faith has helped them lead the life they did. The younger children concentrate more on Bible and other faith stories and festivals whilst the older classes will explore issues raised by faiths and start to develop their own views on religious and moral issues.
